August 16: Here, listen to the anthem of my childhood. (via Cheesedip) Six years ago when I was still in the ad biz (also, back when anime wasn't as big as it is now), my copywriter partner and I thought of spoofing the Voltes V split-screen "Let's volt in" sequence for a Pepsi promo TVC. I even had my 45" record of the theme song (Vicor, no less! hehe) converted to cassette format so as to give my British-born-and-bred boss an audio peg since he had absolutely no idea of who and what Voltes V is. As the first few strains of the theme filled the air, everyone in the hallway started singing along to the Japanese lyrics (making up their own, I'm sure). All my boss could say was, "That's Japanese?? It sounds Russian." By jove, it never occurred to me until then that the instrumental part does sound like a polka. Note: Come presentation day, my writer was sick so, unfortunately for me and the clients, I had to sing the jingle on my own. Yeah, they laughed hard but they didn't go for the idea. We eventually went with our alternative concept, "Pepsi Megadrive", which, if you remember, came out sometime in '96 too.
