October 03:
Ma Vie en Rose, or "My Life in Pink", was one of the movies Arnold and I saw (and absolutely loved) at CineEuropa last week. The movie boldly tackles the subject of homosexuality and it's repercussions through the eyes of a confused little boy -- a fresh take on the subject as most movies (the Hollywood kind) use adult relationships and often cannot portray gayness without referring to AIDS, theatre, and well, Barbra Streisand. The acting, particularly the little boy's, was very natural and believable. One thing I like about watching foreign or independent films is that the actors are unknown (to me, at least) and so have no other personality in my mind but the role they're playing. The movie is also a visual feast -- colors are saturated and art direction is happily kitschy like in Toys and Amelie -- and the story is enjoyable from start to finish. If I had money to spare right now I'd order the DVD without blinking.
