THE CHILDREN OF BATHALA

(VOLUME 3)

“Tell me more about the Bakunawa.”

Separated and trapped within two realms, the former students of Mrs. Enkanta's Mythology Class must race against time to escape the Skyworld to rescue their companions who have been captured by the evil Budniaan and his forces. In the Dream Realm of Misha's mind, Princess Marilag meets a mysterious new friend who may be able to help them through the many challenges that prevent their escape. Meanwhile, in the Dream Realm of a blood tikbalang, Nicole and her group come face to face with the most terrifying creature in all of Philippine Mythology; one that may either destroy them or liberate them. Will the gang be able to find their way back to each other and escape Budniaan's clutches long enough to find a way to defeat him?

REVIEWS

"This grown-up adventure ends on a cliffhanger, but even as readers await the next plot point, the interior journeys of the characters make this volume a fulfilling standalone read. Fans of Arre will certainly want to catch up with this class, and will cross fingers for a future volume."

(The Children of Bathala)  PUBLISHERS WEEKLY    Starred Review

"Arre succeeds in bringing to life indigenous Philippine folklore in contemporary settings... Not only do readers get to understand Filipino mythology through Arre’s narrative, they also experience Filipino ways of being - loyalty, respect for elders, concern for others, helpfulness, and cooperation."

(The Mythology Class)  THE MANHATTAN BOOK REVIEW

"Arre’s dynamic use of motion lines and detailed, frenetic black-and-white art creates tension and keeps the pace up, while the ricochet of English and Tagalog dialogue and wall-to-wall panel saturation immerses readers into the noirish Manila street scenes and disorienting but thrilling action arcs, which recall the perversions of Sin City as much as Dark Knight–style vigilante sequences. Arre, one of the Phillipines’ master cartoonists, weaves his magic yet again."

(The World of Andong Agimat)  PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

"When did (Philippine) komiks really start to become interested in myths? In part, we can thank Arre’s sprawling, 300-plus-page epic The Mythology Class. First published in 1997, it follows an eclectic group of young people who are summoned by mythological heroes of old to help fight enkantos, here depicted as troublesome creatures who have invaded our world and must be sent back to their own dimension."

("Stories for Everyone: Mythology in Comics and the Push for More Diverse Stories"), BOOK RIOT

"The black-and-white art brings Manila to life with uniquely Filipino settings such as crowded jeepneys and sari-sari convenience stores. The graceful linework makes for appealing and expressive characters in both broad comedic scenes and quietly dramatic moments. While the story relies heavily on the trope of pairing a regular schlub with a beautiful woman, in this rare case it proves a winning formula for readers looking for a fresh twist on romantic comedy."

(Halina Filipina)  PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

"Their circuitous love story features language lessons, a film festival, a magazine cover shoot, a monsoon, and reality TV, all of which is captured with expressive delight (even despite the few conflicts) through Arre’s crisp black-and-white panels. Especially gleeful are the repeating chapter-title spreads that show the shadowed outline of Halina and Cris running together, underscoring the possibility of happily-ever-after."
